Update on Sandy Recovery Part I by Rev. Susan Karlson

Earlier this week, clergy leaders from Occupy Faith met with leaders from Staten Island Occupy Sandy and several local clergy members at St. Margaret Mary’s Church.  We talked about serious problems here on Staten Island and the health problems that exist because of the rapid growth of mold in homes that were under water for some time.  Occupy Sandy leaders spoke about how mold and sea water interact and how masks need to be used.  They also said that people living in mold infested dwellings are vulnerable to all kinds of health issues.  How can we address the mold issues when bleach and disinfectant are not always going to kill the mold.  How can we work together to insure that this devastating situation is tackled fully and completely?  These were some of the issues that we are struggling with on Staten Island.  The Staten Island Clergy Leadership which will meet in several weeks here will also be focusing on this and other long term recovery issues.
